A POLICY established decades ago in a bid to protect female workers is now being questioned by increasing numbers of Chinese women who want to keep their jobs. The regulation has men working five years longer than women, whose retirement age is 50.And,although women caders can stay of 55,for men in the same position it is 60. The policy's developers had good intentions, according to officials at the Personnel Ministry. It was to " protect women's health and rights." However, over time, more women have come to regard the policy as discriminitory. "The earlier retirement age means fewer welfware benefits and it's unfair for women,"explains Zhu Dan,a female member of the Chinese People's Political Consualtative Congress(CPPCC). Early retirement could mean that a woman was not eligible for more favourable treatment under certain policies, like those requiring an emplyee to have more than 30 years of service,Zhu explained. She insist that women are fully capable of longer working lives because of improved conditions. The one-child policy has also made it possible for mothers to focus on their jobs . It is especially unfair for those in higher education who reach the top of their careers in their 50s,largely through individual efforts, only to face early retirement, says Huang Rongsheng, the Party secretary at Southwest Normal University.
