Professor Susan Kippax is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia. She has over twenty years research experience in social aspects of health and has an extensive research track record in the areas of sexuality and illicit drug use. More generally, her research experience is in the interface between social aspects of health and illness and clinical and medical practice. Professor Kippax has built an international reputation in HIV/AIDS social research: she has expertise in both qualitative and quantitative studies and with hard to reach populations and people for which there is no clearly defined or enumerated population, e.g. homosexually active men and illicit drug users. She has published over 100 papers in peer review journals/chapters and presented her research at numerous international and national conferences. In 2003 she was awarded a Yale Visiting Fellowship at the Centre for the Study of AIDS, Pretoria, South Africa and is a member of the Global HIV Prevention Working Group (Gates and Kaiser Foundations). In 2005 Professor Kippax received a NSW Public Health Impact Award for her work in HIV.

For the last 17 years, Professor Kippax had first established and acted as the Director of the National Centre in HIV Social Research. She was just recently retired. The National Centre in HIV Social Research conducts research which describes and analyses the social understandings, meanings and practices of peoples, institutions and communities in relation to HIV, Hepatitis C and other communicable diseases.
