These include official, academic and activist sites from mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. A one paragraph summary is given in both English and Chinese, describing the ownership and content of each site. While all sites are in Chinese, many also provide some pages in English. They are categorized by geographical area, and listed in alphabetical order according to the first letter of pinyin phonetic writing in Chinese. If you would like to recommend further Chinese gender sites to be added to the online version of this report, please e-mail s.jolly@ids.ac.uk with a short summary of your site in Chinese or English (or if possible both!). These initial twenty websites have been selected by Feng Yuan. This latter was closed in 2003 after a criminal lawsuit against the site’s founder, Josephine Ho, claiming that she spread obscenities on the internet by linking to bestiality sites. Ho successfully challenged the law suit with wide-spread support from within Taiwan and internationally. According to the website statement, Sex-Pol brings the same ideas as Sexuality Emancipation, but takes the struggle to a new level. Some topics may seem sensational as society is not open to this kind of information, however eye-opening is itself a process of enlightenment from ignorance to awareness. It has become one of the best known Chinese language web pages dedicated to GLBT people, with more than 55,000 daily visits, from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and other areas. The web site provides feed to other Chinese language GLBT sites. A team of about 20 volunteer editors scan the World Wide Web and print media and translate news stories into Chinese. Beside news, other features are: question and answer, legal advice, GLBT literature. It also provides free linking service to many other GLBT Chinese language web sites.
